AEGIS SGR Bearing Protection Rings

Any truly “green” process must achieve sustainability as well as energy efficiency. AEGIS SGR Bearing Protection Rings from Electro Static Technology make this possible by dramatically extending the lives of motors controlled by variable frequency drives (VFDs).

While VFDs deliver impressive energy savings (up to 30 per cent or more), they also induce harmful currents on the shafts of the motors they control. These currents too often damage motor bearings, and lead to costly downtime and premature motor failures. Without an effective means of shaft grounding, the currents will discharge through the bearings, causing pitting and fluting damage to the bearing race walls. Over time, this can lead to noise, vibration, and bearing failure, severely reducing the reliability of an entire system and wiping out any savings from using the VFD.

The AEGIS SGR shaft grounding ring channels harmful VFD-induced shaft currents safely to ground.  Unlike conventional grounding brushes, the SGR is maintenance-free and works with virtually no friction or wear for the service life of the motor.

Installation, whether by the motor manufacturer or end user, is easy and takes just minutes.  Because it comes in halves, the SGR ring can be installed in the field without disconnecting the motor from coupled equipment.  A U-shaped mounting plate fits around the motor shaft, simplifying installation of the AEGIS SGR on motors with shaft shoulders, slingers, and other end bell protrusions.  The plate covers less than ½” of the motor shaft.

Split-Ring Kits are ordered by motor frame size. Standard kits fit NEMA-frame motors with shaft diameters from 0.625” to 3.375” and IEC-frame motors with shaft diameters from 19mm to 95mm. Custom kits are also available.
